Winter Vac 2019 Reads
In between all the traveling I did during my
month-long winter holiday (follow my travel blog Vagabond and Beyond for my mini adventures) I obviously had a few literary companions on the road (and in the air). Here
are a few of the books I enjoyed the most.
1. The Partner by John Grisham
I read a John Grisham book at least once every 6 books, so it only made sense to have John accompany me to Johannesburg after a tough semester. Click here to read the review.
2. My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult
When Sarah and Brian's second child needs a blood
donor and none of them are a match, they decide to have a baby whose genes are
a perfect match for their older daughter. What was meant to be a once off
donation turns into a lifetime of medical procedures and bone marrow donations
until Anna sues her parents for rights to her own body. Nothing is morally
black or white for the Fitzgerald family as they use one daughter to keep their
other daughter alive.
A lot of people have already read the book or
watched the movie (or both - no judging) but if you need a good cry on a 4 hour
flight from Mauritius, I recommend one of Jodi's tearjerkers.
3. Bad Mommy by Tarryn Fisher
Fig is convinced her neighbour, Jolene is a bad
mother and Darius and Mercy, Jolene's husband and daughter, deserve way better.
They deserve Fig and she will stop at nothing (I mean nothing) to ensure they
get her. The problem with psychopathy is that the psychopath has no idea this is
where they're tilted.
Two of my favourite quotes from Tarryn Fisher
are:
"I was selfish that way, wanting people to
bend and give me the love I needed, not necessarily the love they knew how to
give." (eekkk)
"We stray when our happiness is threatened.
Happiness is tied to survival. We feel as if we're failing if we aren't happy,
especially when we open any social media panel and see our friends hashtagging
all the good things in their lives."
4. Perfect and (sequel) Flawed by Cecelia Ahern
Cecelia kept me company in rural poor-signaled
Eastern Cape while I visited my granny. Read the review here.
